三カ月の訓練期間を過した練兵場に立つと、常栄寺の見える空にはピエロ・デ・ラ・フランチェスカの描く雲が浮んでいた。雲はどこで見ても同じだろうが、その頃フランチェスカがやたらと好きだった。雪舟もかつて眺めたであろう雲かな、と思えばたまらなく絵が描きたくなった。そう思うことがその時の私の唯一の救いでもあったようだ。
今の画家は人殺しの訓練を強いられる。人間性を奪われる姿は、練兵場におかれたガスマスクの如く、無機物化されたものと云えた。そのマスクのガラスの眼には、底なしの青い空や白雲がそのまま映っていた。

香月泰男【かづき やすお】
生没年 1911～1974（明治44年～昭和49年）
山口県大津郡三隅村（現・長門市三隅）に生まれた香月泰男は、東京美術学校で油彩画を学び、美術教員の傍ら国画会を中心に作品を発表しました。1967年、太平洋戦争への従軍と戦後のシベリア抑留の経験を描いた「シベリア・シリーズ」により、第一回日本芸術大賞を受賞。その作品は今日も多くの人々を惹きつけています。

〈Painter’s words〉
As I stood on the drill ground after three months of training, the sky above Joeiji Temple was filled with clouds that could have been painted by Piero della Francesca. Of course, clouds are the same no matter where you are, but at that time I was very keen on Francesca’s works. It occurred to me that those clouds might have also been viewed by Sesshu, and at that moment I was seized with the desire to paint. I think this is what got me through.
Now the artist is forced to learn how to kill others, stripped of his humanity and turned into something inorganic, no better than the discarded gas masks lying on the drill ground. The eyeglass in the gas mask faithfully reflects the bottomless blue sky and the white clouds.

Kazuki Yasuo 1911 – 1974
Born in Misumi-mura (now Misumi, Nagato City) in Otsu-gun, Yamaguchi Prefecture. Studied oil painting at Tokyo School of Fine Arts, then taught fine art while producing works that were primarily exhibited at Kokugakai (National Painting Association). Kazuki was sent to fight in the Pacific War (WWII), then interned in Siberia after the war. This experience resulted in the Siberia Series, which won the inaugural Japan Art Grand Prize in 1967. This series is considered an important body of work that still resonates widely today.

《畫家的話》
站在訓練三個多月的練兵場上，常榮寺的天空中浮現出皮耶羅·德拉·弗朗西斯卡描畫的雲彩。雲從哪裏看都是一樣的，但那時的我特別喜歡弗朗西斯卡。這也是雪舟曾經眺望過的雲彩吧，想到這裏，我就忍不住想畫畫。這似乎是我當時唯一的安慰。
現在的畫家被迫接受殺人的訓練。被剝奪人性的樣子，就像練兵場上的防毒面具，可以說是被無機物化的東西。那個面具的玻璃眼睛中，倒映著無底的藍天和白雲。

香月泰男

香月泰男出生於山口縣大津郡三隅村（現長門市三隅），在東京美術學校學習油畫，在擔任美術教員的同時，主要在國畫會發表作品。1967年， “西伯利亞係列 “獲得了第一屆日本藝術大獎，描繪了香月在太平洋戰爭中服役以及戰後被關押在西伯利亞的經曆。那些作品至今也受很多人歡迎。
