Blue sun

Kazuki Yasuo

1969

Oil on canvas

〈Commentaries on works on display 〉

A black mass ascends gradually, like a staircase, with an irregularly shaped slice of brilliant blue in the middle. This picture depicts the open sky as viewed from a hole in the ground. The theme of this picture is based on something once Kazuki Yasuo heard: “You can see the stars, even during the daytime, if you look up from inside a deep hole in the ground. ” This particular work was directly inspired by a time that Kazuki came face to face with an ant, one day during a crawling drill at the height of the Pacific War (WWII). Here is Kazuki, forced to train for a war that he doesn’t want to be part of, watching a tiny ant, so small and insignificant relative to human beings, yet free to scurry about in and out of its home beneath the ground.
Kazuki seems to be saying: “I would rather be an ant, burrowing down into the earth. That way, I wouldn’t have to witness this wretched spectacle of people fighting one another.” Kazuki’s despondent observation during the training drill serves as the defining motif for what might at first glance appear to be an abstract work.

〈Painter’s words〉

I had spent endless months training but had never been sent into battle. I spent my days crawling across the plains of Hulunbuir, propping myself up on my elbows and holding my rifle in both hands above the head. When I looked down at the ground right below me, I often came across ants scurrying back and forth. I saw how they went into their holes whenever they wanted, busying themselves with their daily tasks. And I thought to myself: I wouldn’t mind being an ant, staring up at the blue sky from my little hole in the ground. From deep in the ground, you could probably make out the stars in the sky, even in the middle of the day. No doubt in the ant kingdom they also have conflicts and battles from time to time. But if you burrow down into your hole, at the very least you don’t have to put up with zealots and their cries of “universal brotherhood.”
