〈画家のことば〉
兵隊たちは未明にたたき起されて、耐寒訓練にかり出された。素足のマラソンは初冬の日課であった。ハイラルの夏は短く、秋もたちまち過ぎて、霜が大地を覆いはじめる。私たちは裸足の足裏にくだける霜の音を聞いて走った。やがて足の感覚もなくなるころ、ふと顔をあげると、東天の闇をついて太陽がのぼる。それは一瞬疲労も寒さも忘れさせる美しいものであった。
私は家族へよくたよりを書いた。はがきの半分には必ず絵を描いた。乏しい水彩絵具を使って絵の描ける僅かのチャンスだったので、どれほど心の慰めになっただろうか。のちに、絵はがきに描きとめておいたモチーフのいくつかがシベリヤ・シリーズの画題になった。この太陽もその一つである。

香月泰男【かづき やすお】
生没年 1911～1974（明治44年～昭和49年）
山口県大津郡三隅村（現・長門市三隅）に生まれた香月泰男は、東京美術学校で油彩画を学び、美術教員の傍ら国画会を中心に作品を発表しました。1967年、太平洋戦争への従軍と戦後のシベリア抑留の経験を描いた「シベリア・シリーズ」により、第一回日本芸術大賞を受賞。その作品は今日も多くの人々を惹きつけています。

〈Painter’s words〉
The soldiers are woken before daybreak and sent out into the freezing cold for endurance training, including daily marathon runs in bare feet. Summers are short in Hailar, autumn seems to pass all too soon, and before long the plains are blanketed in frost that crunches beneath our bare soles as we run. Just as I lose all sensation in my feet, I raise my face to the sky and see the sun breaking through the darkness in the east, and in that small moment of beauty I forget about the cold and my immense weariness.
I would send postcards to my family often, always including a picture on half of the card. It was the only opportunity I was able to paint with my meagre watercolor supplies, and it was a source of great comfort to me. Some of the ideas depicted on those postcards, such as the morning sun, would go on to become key motifs in my Siberia Series at a later date.

Kazuki Yasuo 1911 – 1974
Born in Misumi-mura (now Misumi, Nagato City) in Otsu-gun, Yamaguchi Prefecture. Studied oil painting at Tokyo School of Fine Arts, then taught fine art while producing works that were primarily exhibited at Kokugakai (National Painting Association). Kazuki was sent to fight in the Pacific War (WWII), then interned in Siberia after the war. This experience resulted in the Siberia Series, which won the inaugural Japan Art Grand Prize in 1967. This series is considered an important body of work that still resonates widely today.

《畫家的話》
士兵們淩晨就被叫醒，進行耐寒訓練。赤腳馬拉鬆是初冬每天的必修課。海拉爾的夏天很短，秋天也很快過去，寒霜開始覆蓋大地。我們光著腳，聽著寒霜在腳底碎裂的聲音奔跑。不久，當雙腳失去知覺時，抬頭一看，太陽在黑暗的東方升起。那是一瞬間讓人忘卻疲勞和寒冷的美麗。
我經常給家人寫信。明信片的一半一定會畫上畫。因為這是僅有的能用稀缺的水彩畫具作畫的機會，是我心靈的安慰。後來，我把畫在明信片上的一些主題作為西伯利亞係列的畫題。這個太陽也是其中之一。

香月泰男出生於山口縣大津郡三隅村（現長門市三隅），在東京美術學校學習油畫，在擔任美術教員的同時，主要在國畫會發表作品。1967年， “西伯利亞係列 “獲得了第一屆日本藝術大獎，描繪了香月在太平洋戰爭中服役以及戰後被關押在西伯利亞的經曆。那些作品至今也受很多人歡迎。
