〈画家のことば〉
見知らぬ異郷につれて来られた兵隊たちは、何かにつけてはげしく望郷の念にかられた。
私たちの部隊の近くを、満州里とチチハルを結ぶ鉄道が通っていた。汽車は部隊の北側を通って興安嶺に向って消えてゆく。大自然の中に置かれた汽車は、ひどく小さく、まるで玩具のように見えた。音は遠いので聞えないが、煙は列車の何倍もの大きさになって、のたうちながら流れてゆく。
あれに乗ったら日本へ帰れる。日本へ帰る人が乗っているかもしれない･･････。何度こんなことを考えたことだろう。昔はこの汽車に乗って欧州へ留学した人たちもあった。福島繁太郎さんも、かつてこの汽車で、ここを通ったそうである。

香月泰男【かづき やすお】
生没年 1911～1974（明治44年～昭和49年）
山口県大津郡三隅村（現・長門市三隅）に生まれた香月泰男は、東京美術学校で油彩画を学び、美術教員の傍ら国画会を中心に作品を発表しました。1967年、太平洋戦争への従軍と戦後のシベリア抑留の経験を描いた「シベリア・シリーズ」により、第一回日本芸術大賞を受賞。その作品は今日も多くの人々を惹きつけています。

〈Painter’s words〉
Soldiers in a strange land far from home were driven by a fierce longing to return home.
The rail line between Manchouli and Qiqihar was running near where we were stationed. Steam trains would pass by to the north and disappear on their journey towards Xinganling. The steam trains seemed so small in the middle of the wide open spaces, like toys. They were too far away to be heard, but the smoke was much bigger than the train itself and could be seen billowing, thrashing about in the sky.
I would think to myself over and over again that if I could just get on that train, I could make my way back to Japan. Perhaps there were some Japanese people on board right now, on their way home! Others had taken that very train, years ago, on their way to pursue academic studies in faraway Europe. I’ve heard Fukushima Shigetaro also passed by here on that train once upon a time.
Siberian Series (Shinchosha, 1971)
Kazuki Yasuo 1911 – 1974
Born in Misumi-mura (now Misumi, Nagato City) in Otsu-gun, Yamaguchi Prefecture. Studied oil painting at Tokyo School of Fine Arts, then taught fine art while producing works that were primarily exhibited at Kokugakai (National Painting Association). Kazuki was sent to fight in the Pacific War (WWII), then interned in Siberia after the war. This experience resulted in the Siberia Series, which won the inaugural Japan Art Grand Prize in 1967. This series is considered an important body of work that still resonates widely today.

《畫家的話》
被帶到異鄉的士兵們，無論遇到什麽事都有強烈的思鄉之念。
我們的部隊附近有一條連接滿洲裏和齊齊哈爾的鐵路。火車從部隊的北面經過，消失在興安嶺方向。在大自然中的火車，顯得非常渺小，看起來就像玩具一樣。因為距離遠所有聽不到聲音，但能看到煙霧變大成列車的好幾倍，緩緩飄過。
坐那列車就能回日本。可能會有回日本的人在車上……這樣的事情我不知道思考過多少次。過去也有人乘坐這列火車去歐洲留學。據說福島繁太郎先生也曾經乘坐這列火車經過這裏。

香月泰男出生於山口縣大津郡三隅村（現長門市三隅），在東京美術學校學習油畫，在擔任美術教員的同時，主要在國畫會發表作品。1967年， “西伯利亞係列 “獲得了第一屆日本藝術大獎，描繪了香月在太平洋戰爭中服役以及戰後被關押在西伯利亞的經曆。那些作品至今也受很多人歡迎。
