〈画家のことば〉
8月15日、私たちの部隊は、補給廠をつくるため、朝鮮へ南下する貨車に乗っていた。私たちは貨車の上で敗戦を知った。鴨緑江沿岸の安東まで来て、ソ連の武装解除を受けた。私たちを乗せた貨車は、故国へ背を向けて、再び奉天へ戻った。ここでソ連兵のジープや自動小銃に監視され、北陵のキャンプへ入れられて、部隊の再編成が行われた。新品の冬服が支給された時、少なくもこの冬を越すまでは日本に帰れない、いやシベリヤ行は間違いない、とどの兵隊の胸にも、不安が黒雲のようにひろがっていた。

香月泰男【かづき やすお】
生没年 1911～1974（明治44年～昭和49年）
山口県大津郡三隅村（現・長門市三隅）に生まれた香月泰男は、東京美術学校で油彩画を学び、美術教員の傍ら国画会を中心に作品を発表しました。1967年、太平洋戦争への従軍と戦後のシベリア抑留の経験を描いた「シベリア・シリーズ」により、第一回日本芸術大賞を受賞。その作品は今日も多くの人々を惹きつけています。

〈Painter’s words〉
On August 15, we boarded a freight train south to Korea to set up a supply depot. It was on that train that we got news of the defeat. We made it as far as Andong on the Yalu Giyang coast, where we were met by Soviet soldiers and disarmed. Our freight train promptly turned around and headed back to Mukden. Now we were at the mercy of the Soviets with their jeeps and automatic rifles. They put us in a camp near the eldengge munggan and reconfigured our squadrons. Then they issued us with brand-new winter clothes, and from this we understood that we were being sent to Siberia and would not be going back to Japan until after the winter, if at all. Each and every one of us felt his heart sink like a stone as the grim realization dawned.

Kazuki Yasuo 1911 – 1974
Born in Misumi-mura (now Misumi, Nagato City) in Otsu-gun, Yamaguchi Prefecture. Studied oil painting at Tokyo School of Fine Arts, then taught fine art while producing works that were primarily exhibited at Kokugakai (National Painting Association). Kazuki was sent to fight in the Pacific War (WWII), then interned in Siberia after the war. This experience resulted in the Siberia Series, which won the inaugural Japan Art Grand Prize in 1967. This series is considered an important body of work that still resonates widely today.

8月15日，我們的部隊為了建立補給廠，乘坐了南下朝鮮的貨車。我們在貨車上得知戰敗的消息。來到鴨綠江沿岸的安東後，被蘇聯解除了武裝。載著我們的貨車背對祖國，再次返回奉天。在這裏蘇聯兵的吉普車和自動步槍的監視下，被關進北陵的營地，進行部隊再編。當領到嶄新的冬裝時，每個士兵的心中都籠罩著一股不安，這意味至少這個冬天之前是回不了日本的，不，肯定會去西伯利亞的。

香月泰男出生於山口縣大津郡三隅村（現長門市三隅），在東京美術學校學習油畫，在擔任美術教員的同時，主要在國畫會發表作品。1967年， “西伯利亞係列 “獲得了第一屆日本藝術大獎，描繪了香月在太平洋戰爭中服役以及戰後被關押在西伯利亞的經曆。那些作品至今也受很多人歡迎。
