ブラゴベシチェンスクにおける抑留生活の第一歩は、三日間の荷役作業で始まった。船着場から引込線の貨車まで6キロ、コーリャンをつめた麻袋や豆かすをかついで、暗いみぞれの降る道を歩いた。空腹の身にはひどくこたえた。凍りついた路面に足でもとられたら、たちまちひっくりかえって、再び起きあがれないかも知れぬ。だから、そろりそろりと、二時間も三時間もかかって慎重に歩いた。たとえ戦友が倒れても、助け起すどころではない、我が身を守るのが精いっぱいであった。
つきつめてゆけば、人間が麻袋を運んでいるのではなく、麻袋が人間に運ばせているという感じた。運ぶ人間はもはや人間ではなく、運搬機械と化した奴隷だった。

香月泰男【かづき やすお】
生没年 1911～1974（明治44年～昭和49年）
山口県大津郡三隅村（現・長門市三隅）に生まれた香月泰男は、東京美術学校で油彩画を学び、美術教員の傍ら国画会を中心に作品を発表しました。1967年、太平洋戦争への従軍と戦後のシベリア抑留の経験を描いた「シベリア・シリーズ」により、第一回日本芸術大賞を受賞。その作品は今日も多くの人々を惹きつけています。

〈Painter’s words〉
Our first task at the Blagoveshchensk concentration camp was three days of loading in supplies. We trudged through dark sleet along the six-kilometer road from the boat landing to the railway line carrying gunnysacks of sorghum and bean cake. It exhausted us as we were so famished. If you slipped and fell over on the icy road you might never get back up again. So we walked slowly and deliberately. Sometimes it took two hours, sometimes three. If your friend fell, you could not come to his aid. Everyone had to look out for themselves.
When you think about it, it’s not so much humans carrying gunnysacks as gunnysacks appointing humans as their carriers. Those carrying the gunnysacks are barely human any more—they are slaves transformed into carrying machines.

Kazuki Yasuo 1911 – 1974
Born in Misumi-mura (now Misumi, Nagato City) in Otsu-gun, Yamaguchi Prefecture. Studied oil painting at Tokyo School of Fine Arts, then taught fine art while producing works that were primarily exhibited at Kokugakai (National Painting Association). Kazuki was sent to fight in the Pacific War (WWII), then interned in Siberia after the war. This experience resulted in the Siberia Series, which won the inaugural Japan Art Grand Prize in 1967. This series is considered an important body of work that still resonates widely today.

《畫家的話》
布拉戈維申斯克的拘留生活的第一步，是從三天的裝卸工作開始的。從碼頭到專線的貨車，距離6公裏路程，我們扛著裝滿高粱的麻袋和豆渣，走在陰沉的雨雪路上。饑腸轆轆的感覺非常難受。腳踩在結冰的路面上，如果不小心摔倒，可能就會再也爬不起來。所以，隻能小心翼翼地走了兩三個小時。即使戰友倒下了，也顧不上幫忙扶起來，能保護自己就不錯了。
一個接一個地走過去，就好像不是人在搬運麻袋，而是麻袋在安排人去搬運。搬運的人儼然已不是人，而更像是搬運機器的奴隸。

香月泰男出生於山口縣大津郡三隅村（現長門市三隅），在東京美術學校學習油畫，在擔任美術教員的同時，主要在國畫會發表作品。1967年， “西伯利亞係列 “獲得了第一屆日本藝術大獎，描繪了香月在太平洋戰爭中服役以及戰後被關押在西伯利亞的經曆。那些作品至今也受很多人歡迎。
