ca.1766(明和3年頃)

Autumn Moon in the Mirror, from the "Eight Views of the Parlor" series

Suzuki Harunobu

ca.1766

Zashiki hakkei (Eight Views of the Parlor) is an eight-print series by Suzuki Harunobu. This series provides representative examples of Harunobu’s work. The prints are parodies of the Chinese popular theme for paintings, Shosho hakkei (Eight Views along the Xiao and Xiang Rivers). Harunobu replaces them with scenes of ordinary daily life in the Edo period.
This piece took its theme from Dotei Shugetsu (Autumn Moon over Lake Dongting), one of the Eight Views along the Xiao and Xiang Rivers series. It has as its theme a night along Lake Dongting in Hunan province, China, illuminated by autumn moonlight.
The original Chinese painting, Dotei Shugetsu, depicts the moon in the sky over the lake. In Harunobu’s work, the round yellow frame of a mirror set on the dressing table is the analogue of the moon. To add to the analogy, Japanese silver grass, a special feature of autumn in Japan, is depicted outside the window.

◆ Shosho hakkei (Eight Views along the Xiao and Xiang Rivers)
The Shosho hakkei series depicts eight scenic spots near the point where two rivers, the Xiao and Xiang, drain into Lake Dongting.
The Shosho hakkei series includes the following paintings: Heisa Rakugan (Wild Geese Descending onto a Sandbar); Enpo Kihan (Clouds and Sails Offshore in the Distance); Sanshi Seiran (Mountain Village after a Storm); Koten Bosetsu (River and Sky in Evening Snowfall); Dotei Shugetsu (Autumn Moon Over Lake Dongting); Shosho Yau (Night Rain Over the Xiao and Xiang); Enji Bansho (An Evening Bell From a Distant Temple); Gyoson Sekisho (Fishing Village in the Glow of Sunset).
Scenic spots in Japan have also been depicted on the model of Shosho hakkei. For example, we have Ohmi hakkei and Kanazawa hakkei.

Suzuki Harunobu (1725? – 1770)
Suzuki Harunobu was an ukiyo-e artist who was active during the period from around the 10th year of the Horeki era (1760) to the 7th year of the Meiwa era (1770).
He was one of the first major ukiyo-e artists to develop the full-color woodblock prints known as nishiki-e.

(Suzuki Harunobu)

ca.1766
